The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
